Turkish Medical Tourism
Turkish medical tourism is rapidly growing thanks to high-quality medical infrastructure and low costs.
Over the last decade, the ‘healing power of travel’ has grown from a cliché into a thriving international industry. In the past, traveling abroad for medical treatment was a last resort of people in poorer countries trying to get high-tech treatments in richer ones. Today, however, the reverse is true, with centers of medical excellence drawing medical tourists from around the world to build a thriving new division of their economies.
One of the most prominent examples of this is Turkey. The country has long positioned itself to host visitors from Europe, the US, and the GCC who come to make the most of Turkey’s high clinical standards, low prices, and accessibility, which have made Istanbul one of the world’s top-10 medical destinations.
Turkey’s advanced health sector has been extremely well funded over the past two decades, allowing the country brush off the Covid-19 crisis with one of the world’s fastest vaccine rollout programs. This efficiency and professionalism is very much in evidence across the board, including in cosmetic treatments and post-op care.
Most Turkish medical tourism is for surgery, and most of that is cosmetic, including nose jobs, hair transplants, and liposuction. Non-surgical services include dentistry and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, all of which are on offer at a faction of European or US prices, but always delivered to high and consistent standards. Most of these are available at less than 50% of the price of similar procedures in Europe or the US, with short waiting lists and plenty of options to choose from.
Wellness tourism
As it happens, medical tourism first entered the historical record when Ancient Greeks travelled to the city of Pergamon (today’s Bergama on Turkey’s Aegean cost) to be treated at the Temple of Asclepius. But Turkey’s western and southern coasts have since turned to a new form of medical tourism, known as “wellness tourism”, with a healthy selection of retreats, spas, and communes dotted along some of the world’s most beautiful coastlines.
If that sounds like an adventure too far, take advantage of Istanbul’s post-op hospitality facilities: specialized hotels that cater to those recovering from operations but don’t have a home to go to, and will help make your stay in Turkey revitalizing, comfortable, and memorable.
