Turkish is the mother tongue of 90% of Turkish citizens. As is so often the case in Turkey, this needs to be earned the hard way. Turkish is a delightful but dizzying combination of East Asian grammar, a Latin alphabet, and Persian vocabulary, with a bit of Arabic, Greek, and French thrown in for good measure. But despite its international heritage, Turkish is a surprisingly regular, grammatically consistent language, meaning that once you get your head around the basics you are well on the way to becoming conversational, which your local shopkeepers and baristas will be happy to help you with.
To get past the basics, it is advisable and common practice to sign up for Turkish language courses, most of which are designed to get newcomers up to speed quickly. Get to know fellow yabancis (foreigners) at a group lesson, or take private one-on-one lessons if you want to supercharge your Turkish experience from the get-go.
One way to apply for a residence permit in Turkey is through a Turkish language courses from an accredited Ministry of Education language school. The application process must be done from one’s home country, with the school providing materials that you will then present at your local Turkish consulate or embassy, to then receive a Turkish language learning visa which you’ll use when you arrive in the country to apply for the corresponding residence permit. These typically only grant six months of residency and cannot be renewed. The cheapest packages (invitation, tuition and providing paperwork) are around 2,500 USD (not including application fee).
It’s worth noting that most Turkish language courses that grant residency have been reviewed by the Ministry of Education and thus you can be confident in the curriculum.
